NGR Season 34 Episode 6: Getting Back into Game Development and Music

I don't know how many times I've ever done that, started talking before the intro, and there's there's a way actually to turn it off, and I've turned it off before, but it's turned back on. So I think blog talk radio just wants it to be there. I don't blame them. But yeah, I don't know how many times I've ever started. Talking, I know better, but I hope you guys are doing great. It's been a little while. I brought two weeks I think since the last show. I'm still home recovering from surgery and that's going alright, but I thought I'd be back to work by now. I was planning on being back. By December 1st, the doctor says he wants me to wait until January 1st so I have a whole another month to fill my time. And I hadn't planned on that. So it's been a big process of just trying to figure out how I'm going to make that work. I hadn't planned on a whole another months worth of bills. But. Here we are. So the good news is, is that I recently got a new gaming laptop and I'm working on some video game development and. That's that's pretty cool, but there's a lot that, you know, I want to do that I'm learning about. So I'm I'm spending a lot of time learning and configuring things and just learning how to put stuff together. My first big project that I wanted to work on had to do. With just getting my Oculus to work, I have Oculus Quest two and I knew that you could hook it up with the game engine that I use. II had been learning before how to use Unity game engine and umm the game engine. Back when I was learning it. You VR goggles weren't really a thing. Umm, And so you know, I was just learning to do regular game development, but I always thought it would be cool if there was a way to do VR with it. And now there is. So it took me several days to get I I went through two different computers, I bought a computer. It turned out to not be what I needed. And I took it back and got a better computer. I did need a gaming laptop to to develop games. I was hoping I could get away without one, but it really wasn't going to happen. So I got a different laptop. And it's all. It's still says that it's not like up to spec, but I know that it is like I've gone through their specs list and. It's it's good. So, but then it took me, it takes several days to get like all the software put in and like everything and then you had to figure out how to make it work and I didn't have the right cable. It took me a few days of trying different cables to get the right cable. Umm, that would transfer the data between the Oculus and the laptop and so that was a thing. And you know just getting that all set up so it would, first it was just a matter of getting inside the game, excuse me, and I did that. And then it was a matter of being able to move inside the game. And so I've been working on that now. I want to have. My game. This is something that everybody can use and we can all go into the world together and interact with each other in real time. So now the project I'm currently working on is learning how to set it all up to be. Multiplayer like that. And I'm following a tutorial and it's just the tutorials, really great. But a few videos into the tutorial there was an update and all this stuff had to be changed. So as I'm doing the first couple of videos there's components that are missing because things have been updated and moved around and so. That was very frustrating, Like a lot of things didn't work. So like halfway through I did the update, but then other things are broken, so there's all kinds of errors and all kinds of issues that I'm trying to get. Umm, to get it to work, So it's very challenging, but I've done this type of stuff before and I know that if I keep at it I'll figure it out. Umm. Also, if video games development were easy, everybody would do it. It's really not. It's very, very complicated. Umm, so I mean like and thank goodness for tutorials and like people that are there to help you because if you just sit down and tried to figure this out on your own the IT would never happen. Like unless you're I mean you just need the experience. I've been developing websites for a long time. And so I know some basic skills, but like when it comes to game development, it's a whole different universe. There's so much to know. And so at least they have some experience doing gaming development before. But man is there a lot to figure out. So so I'm just kind of like the the artwork on the show is is really just a basic terrain. It's not anything too exciting, I just wanted to have some kind of game related. Um, artwork up and the other screen shot that I just had posted the website. I don't like to have the radio show like have the same thumbnail as a video because then it's kind of confusing. So I just threw that up there for now, but I'll keep adding new stuff as I work on it today. I'll probably be working on it. The more just trying to get the the multiplayer thing set up, but there's not a lot at this point to. Umm. To video record for you guys because it's kind of, it's not very visually exciting. I'm doing stuff like. Fixing errors and just doing different scripts and things like that. So it's a lot of code right now and a lot of updates and imports and all that kind of stuff, so it's going to be a little bit before I have anything like really fun to show you guys, hopefully. Not too long, hopefully in the next you know. Like in the next day or two, I can get somewhere where I can start doing more exciting, like visual stuff. Um, I Let's see so far. It has had me. What has it had me do? In this tutorial I have started setting up like the networking thing for it. Umm I have getting texted my ears like my my prescription is ready. Walgreens has to send you like 30 notifications. They can't just do one. Umm. Sorry for the distraction, but I. Oh, like there's like a thing I'm trying to work on right now and I'm a little stuck on it. Um, but it's put up a little screen in the virtual world where you'd be able to log in. So you hit the, you click the button and log in. And. I'm trying to set up that part right now, but I'm stuck on something and I don't know if it's because. It has something to do with the update between videos that has happened as to why I can't get it to work, or if there's like something I'm not comprehending and there's something I'm missing. But there's this thing where you put in your buttons and they're supposed to show up in the in the, what they call it, the inspector window. It's like part of the editor. And umm, it's supposed to make some like input fields and it's not creating the input fields. And so I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but because the version is different it's I'm stuck. Because it doesn't match the tutorials, so I don't know I need to watch more tutorials. That's the thing too, is like if I just sat there and watched all of the tutorials first. It would probably be easier, but I want to work on stuff like I don't want to sit through and watch hours of tutorials and then like not have done anything. So I don't know, I'm I'm still getting things figured out with that, but I'll talk to you guys more about what I've got going on. That's just a little bit. Of of what's happening so far. In the meta store for like Oculus games and stuff like that so. Umm, I don't know if they have any deals right now. I haven't clicked the link. I know that I was in the store the other day and I saw a meta quest two for $250. Now there's two different Mediquest too. The one that I have is right now is just the base model, it has the lower amount of memory. Space. So I spent originally 300 on it, but I saw it in the store for 250. Thing is they just came out with the Mediquest 3, so they have a new version. So the the two is on sale right now. So if you guys want to spend a little bit less, I think it's probably, I would imagine it would be less on sale, you know right now I think the one with the more memory when it was whole. Price was 400. So I don't know if check out the link, maybe you can get a deal. But either way, if you even if there's not a deal, you'll get $30 credit towards getting games and stuff, so that's pretty cool. Umm. If you haven't tried like an Oculus. VR headset before you gotta check it out, it's a really awesome and I can't wait to get this world built so that we can all get in there together. Umm, somebody. I was actually did my umm little. Like if you guys have seen yet, I have a scene where it's or I made a video of it too, where it's just like a an RV. And a couple of, umm like lawn chairs I think, and like all the fire and some tents. I don't know, maybe I didn't have the lawn chairs in that one, but it's just like a flat ground with some grass. Like flat grass. But somebody's like, are you going to build a AV? Running, man. And I said there would be. Actually, I thought about that actually, because I really don't care that much about. Like fully developing the game right away, like that's something that we can do over time. I just want to get it where we can all be in there together. So that's my goal. Is we'll get, you know get the get everyone in there, get that part working. It's gonna have like audio where we'll be able to talk to each other and and stuff like that. No, I'm just, I'm getting that worked out and. Like I said, I'll keep working on that and I was going to start music and I'm still talking. But yeah, I'll come back and talk some more. And for those of you that do have an Oculus or another VR headset, I'm actually trying to build it to be compatible with multiple VR headsets, not just Oculus, but I had the Oculus, so that's why I decided. Umm, with that in mind, but uh for you, those of you that have one I I hopefully I'll have the multiplayer up and running soon. I in order to run a multiplayer game you have to have a server which? Uh, custom money. So I'm going to have to look into that. I don't. I'm not ready for that yet. Umm. But you know, I'll figure that out when the time comes. Same with having the. Voice it available in there. You have to have a server to handle that and so there's some costs involved in things like that, but. I will be. And when I'm ready, I will be having at least a couple of people join me. So I will, you know, it'll probably be a small group of us and we'll, you know, initially develop the game together through VR and then we'll add more people after that. I'm just trying to get the whole thing up and running, so I I definitely think I have a few hours ahead of me. Umm, as far as getting that going? Uh, is concerned but. Fingers crossed and I hope it all works out without too much frustration. We'll just see. Umm, so yeah. And then I was thinking, you know, it's not. I'm not trying to rush into Christmas. I know everybody else. Like so many people this year went into Christmas mode the second Halloween was over and it's just like, dude, relax. Like it's not even December yet. So I'm good with like a month of Christmas. I do the same thing for Halloween. I wait till October 1st. Before I put out the Halloween stuff, umm, so I'm kind of put, you know, as far as Christmas goes, I haven't done anything like that. I know people that have had their Christmas trees up for a while already and stuff, but I'm not there yet. But either way, when I was thinking about doing this radio show. Last night I was thinking about all the Christmas music that we have because we have a lot of Christmas music that you don't hear on the air typically at Christmas time. So it's kind of, it's kind of fun. I like that. And so and we haven't heard a lot of those songs since last year. Last year was the first year I really did that, you know? We've had a couple of songs on the air over the years, but it's been, you know, like half a dozen or less probably. Um, definitely ten or less. But now we've got a full list. So I would say the next time you hear from me we're going to be playing some Christmas time music. So get prepared, but I won't shove it down your throat because I'm not down like that. I'm waiting for December, so. We do have a few minutes left in the show before I go and start working on that video game stuff. I will be around the website on and off today. So it's a, you know, I've been kind of not around maybe the last like week or so, maybe maybe two weeks almost. It was a lot of. Just dealing with the recovery from surgery and of course doing family things. My kids were off school for a week for Thanksgiving break. We did see some family and and then. I went out of town. On Thanksgiving and my car has broken down and now I'm stranded at the moment. But luckily I have a comfortable place to stay and I've been able to take care of most of what I need to take care of right from here. So until my car. Is back up and running. I will be staying put so. Uh, I will be. I I do have a lot of the kids. Now that the kids are back to school, I do have a lot of. Time to myself, completely to myself. So I don't have really anybody to hang out with, anybody to come over, because I'm not at my place. Umm, And with my car not running, I'm not going too far, so I will be on the computer I would say most of the time. So I look forward to hanging out with you guys and I hope you're doing well.
