Okey Szoke, the artistic alias of Australian producer Sam Szoke-Burke, is a pioneering force in experimental electronic and club music. As a founding member of the transnational label Brother Sister Records, Szoke explores global intercultural trends, blending silence, irregular loops, ambience, and rhythmic dynamics into innovative soundscapes.
His work often draws from diverse influences, including slow-grinding tarraxo and tarraxinha genres from Angola and Cape Verde, as well as collaborations that bridge continents. A standout project is the 2018-2019 One Joe EP, a vibrant collaboration with Namibian artist One Joe (Joseph Nashilundo). This release fuses traditional Ovambo “Shambo” music—rooted in Namibia’s cultural heritage—with contemporary Afro-Pop elements, resulting in colorful tracks like “Kaana Kameme” (featuring DJ Kleva Kaslam), “Onhana,” and “Efiku.” The EP celebrates themes of love, honor, and traditional agriculture, earning praise for its modern take on African roots music.
